Last week bought a new addition to the radio shack in the form of a Raspberry Pi (Yay & sorry if you’re still waiting) being totally impatient I had it unboxed, and setup within 30mins running Debian which is my choice of linux operating system.
The first task I’d planned was using it to run a APRS iGate from home so using apt-get install xastir and configuring it to work with the Foxdelta Foxview3 output I had a it running without any issue and its been running non stop since listening away and gating anyone its heard.
Clearly this is hardly the only task you could easily run all your AX.25 needs using this little ARM based unit and it no doubt has other functions basic logging within the shack being just another then its the possibilities like further automating things around the shack and allowing remote access to stuff I’m sure all which i will explore in the coming weeks.
Nice to see you got it working so quickly. Mine came the other day and it seems very easy to work with. Like you up and running in 30 minutes. I’ve not used Xastir before so will give it a spin at the weekend and see where that gets me. Sounds like a good option.
I just got my RPI and would love to find a Ham use for it. I have a old BayPac BP-1 software TNC and was wondering if you thought Xastir might work with it. I’m also exploring using the RPI to control a Softrock SDR radio with a USB sound card.
Thanks and 73s from KB6QVI
I’ve no idea if a BayPac TNC will work with Xastir but I’m sure if you do some searching on Google you might find some possible answers.
As for running the Softrock, you might find its a little slow!
Hi,
I am running xastir on a model b (256mb) connected to a TNC-Pi (Coastal Chipworks) but have map issues. Downloaded uk_aprs maps from Cross Country Wireless website.
Maps good for ui-view (x86) but not displaying properly in xastir on rpi.
