After reading on G4ILO’s blog about the Baofeng UV-3R, I thought I’d order one to give it ago as I only had a 2m VX-150 plus the UV-3R looked a lot lighter and something I might be more inclined to carry around so on the 16 May I ordered one from radio-factory on ebay and on the 24th of May it arrived in the post good result considering if came from Hong Kong!
After giving it a charge which took 4 hours, It was time for me to head off to the eye hospital for a vision test handy as it also gave me the chance to take the UV3-R with me and agreed to have a 2m QSO with Dad when I arrived, which we did using 1 watt from the hand held I was easily heard by Dad (M3JFM) at home using the IC-910H plus 2m beam pointing in the direction of the hospital and of course he was end stopping!
Later that day I managed to figure out how to send 1750hz tone (not how the manual says!) and get repeater shifts and the like setup, during a test later on in the week I tried it with the hands free ear piece and the audio I’m told is much better using that so might do some further tests and recordings to see what the actual difference is!
Overall good buy for the money considering it covers 2m/70cms FM and weighs nothing!
Hi Peter, was there any import duties/taxes payable?
Nope!
You figured out the tone burst PTT+VOL did you?
I also talk to my unlicensed XYL with this little rig having programmed all straight 8 PMR channels into the memory.Ideal for family days out self and M3 son on 2 meters and XYL on PMR using Dual watch.
Yep figured that one out, yet to get it into FM Radio mode though!
FM radio is easy just press and hold down the orange L/R button on the left side change station by turning the knob. If the torch lights up as well just give the orange button another quick press and it will go out
If I press and hold L/R nothing happens on mine
These are great little radios. I think I must be the only person on the planet not to use tone bursts as I never had a problem with that, just programmed in the PL tone frequency.
I only need tone burst for one repeater thats GB3VA which doesn’t use CTCSS! 🙂
I think orange button will not work if you are in memory mode, try it in straight 2 meter mode.
I bought a duoband antenne for this, Diamond SRH519. It works pretty well. Nice gadget for this price.
please tell how did you get the 1750 tone burst to go out im stumped and cant access the repeaters here in cornwall! any functions not in the manual you can tell us about would be greatly appreciated, getting father one for his b/day! mine is the 18 menu version..cracking little rig for £25
hold down PTT and press the VOL button!

How did you find the harmonic suppression when you did the usual checks?
How do you get it into memory mode once memories are programmed ?
How to get it to scan ?
My charger went bang as soon as I plugged it in

73, Peter
How do you program in PL tone
and also program in receive and transmit frequency for a repeater

Jose that’s some very useful information!
I have the MkII, but noted with the earpiece that came with it it stuck on transmit after keying and smelled hot – so not so good. I don’t know if the hot smell was burning something off on first use or burning something out! Still to find out how much of it works – and also what some of the options really mean! “Filters out the repeater tone”? “Relay Message”?
Bought from HK via EBay for £30 inc £9 postage, arrived in SIX days. MKII version. Excellent sensitivity, Used in 30ft long Faraday cage (metal caravan) and accessed IOW repeater from 20 miles on supplied whip! If you have been deafened by loud audio, press vol
then adjust the rotary knob. ( some people speak of very high audio!)
WARNING – Very high harmonics from 2m, mine is very strong on 70cm when txing on 2m! UK dealer is modding before despatch but rig is £49. (low pass filter mod). Small handbook is in very clear English Well Done! To program memories, you will need a pc and custom serial/usb cable and drivers. 73.
